The Spain Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai stood as a vibrant symbol of Spain’s creative spirit and commitment to a sustainable future. Designed by Amann Cánovas & Maruri, the pavilion embodied a harmonious blend of Al Andaluz aesthetics and cutting-edge innovation, presenting a vision of architecture that serves both people and the planet.

Roca’s involvement elevated this vision, providing advanced bathroom solutions that balanced performance, sustainability and design excellence. Each of the pavilion’s 17 bathrooms became a testament to the power of thoughtful design, seamlessly integrating functionality with the pavilion’s overarching themes of eco-consciousness and human-centered innovation.

A Unique Aesthetic Infused with Innovation

At the heart of the pavilion's design, bold, colourful cones provided both aesthetic appeal and functional cooling for the public space. The vibrant interplay of colours and organic shapes flowed seamlessly between the interior and exterior. Roca's Inspira round wall-hung WC and Beyond rimless WC perfectly matched this aesthetic, their sleek, contemporary lines echoing the flowing forms of the pavilion. These products not only complemented the vibrancy of the design, but also reinforced its sustainability goals with advanced water-saving technology.

 

In the bathrooms, Roca's carefully balanced playfulness with both sophistication and practicality. The soft, rounded contours of the Inspira basins, combined with the Luna and Iridia mirrors, created calm, welcoming environments. Even practical elements, such as Wing urinal partitions, embraced the Pavilion's fluid design language and blended effortlessly with the energetic and colourful interiors.

 

This thoughtful integration of colour, form and innovation transformed the pavilion’s bathrooms into more than just functional spaces. Roca's products became key players in the pavilion's narrative, offering visitors moments of inspiration and beauty, while demonstrating the harmony between cutting-edge design and sustainability.

 

A Human-Centric Design Philosophy

Under by the theme ‘Intelligence for Life’, the pavilion reflected Spain’s commitment to innovation and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Roca’s bathroom solutions supported this vision with some of its water-saving solutions, including the EP1 electronic dual flush plate and the Avant self-closing faucet, combining a blend of water efficiency, usability and timeless design.

 

The pavilion’s architecture, designed as a series of shaded, interconnected spaces, encouraged moments of reflection and connection. This tranquil environment resonated with Roca’s ethos of enhancing the user experience through thoughtful design.

Constructed using lightweight materials and modular systems, the pavilion embodied the principles of the circular economy, emphasising sustainability at every stage of its design. In line with Roca's sustainability philosophy, the bathroom solutions selected featured innovative designs and efficient use of resources, in line with the project's commitment to minimising environmental impact. These choices reinforced the pavilion's commitment to creating responsible, adaptable spaces without compromising on design or functionality.
