Casa IV is located in the countryside, on the outskirts of the city of Elche, with its warm, humid climate and arid landscape. Although it was originally planned as a simple extension, it ended up being something completely different.

Roca talks to Benjamín Iborra, co-founder and partner of Mesura, about how Mediterranean identity shapes Casa IV, from its architectural essence to the latest integration of the Tura bath, WC and over countertop basin, and Nu’s Stripes faucet.

  • Casa IV is an extension of a house built in the 1980s in the Elche countryside. What was the original vision for this project?
The initial brief was to maintain the same architectural language as the existing house. However, our vision quickly expanded to focus on a deeper connection between the house and its natural surroundings. Elche’s rich Mediterranean heritage became a driving force in shaping both approach and the spirit of the project.
  • This Mediterranean identity also resonates with Roca’s philosophy. How did the Mediterranean influence the design of Casa IV?
The Mediterranean shapes spaces in a very specific way, emphasising simplicity, openness and connection to the outdoors. With Casa IV, we wanted to build on this tradition while adding a subtle layer of complexity to every corner of the house. The openness and lightness typical of Mediterranean homes inspired us, particularly in the bathrooms, where we used different volumes to reflect this sense of flow.
  • You’ve taken a unique approach to the layout of the bathrooms. Can you explain your design thinking?
Rather than creating a standard, enclosed bathroom, we wanted it to be an integral part of the overall experience of the house. By distributing the elements throughout the space, the bathroom becomes more than just functional – it becomes a series of moments that unfold as you move around the house.

The bathtub, for example, is not just an isolated feature, but an integral part of the bedroom, serving as a central, almost life-giving element that reflects the essence of Mediterranean living.
  • Roca’s Tura and Nu collections were chosen for the bathrooms. How do these collections fit into the overall philosophy of the house?
The synergy between the Tura collection and Casa IV is undeniable. Its warmth, serenity and elegance are perfectly in line with the Mediterranean identity we wanted to bring to this project. Both the collection and the architecture emphasise simplicity, but with an underlying depth and character. The way Tura fits into the space feels organic, as if it was meant to be there

Nu, on the other hand, introduces a more playful and dynamic touch, that contrasts yet complements the sophistication of Tura. Together, they create a balanced dialogue between elegance and simplicity, reflecting the overall philosophy of Casa IV.

Both collections play a key role in reinforcing the atmosphere we wanted to create in Casa IV. Tura brings a sense of calm and refinement, while Nu adds a touch of vitality. Together, they don’t just complement the architecture - they enhance the experience of living in the space. This balance of elements reflects the essence of Mediterranean living, where simplicity is enriched by thoughtful detail. Ultimately, it’s this seamless integration that makes the design feel complete and true to its roots.

The collaboration between Mesura and Roca in Casa IV blends architecture and design, using Mediterranean principles of simplicity, openness and harmony with nature. Roca's bathroom collections bring a calm, refined feel to the home and helps enrich the living experience.
