Green building certification standards

Sustainability might and should be quantifiable

We take great pride in honoring our commitments. This is the reason why we proactively work with international environmental certifications for construction to provide objective and verifiable assessment on the environmental benefits of our products.

Green building certifications have become one of the main players in the transformation of the construction sector in recent years, encouraging designers, owners, constructors and product manufacturers to incorporate increasingly environmentally sustainable solutions and materials. LEED, BREEAM, DGNB and VERDE are among these certifications.

Each certification standard has its own structure and procedures, but despite their formal differences, they share similar environmental principles and requirements. A product alone can never be certified LEED, BREEAM or VERDE. It will only contribute to achieving the objectives of some of the requirements set out by the certification standard.

Roca provides everything required to equip bathrooms: Ceramics, Faucets, Furniture, Installation Systems, Bathtubs, Showers, Accessories and Shower Enclosures. Roca products have a major impact in interior water efficiency, being able to provide almost the total range of products evaluated in this category.

LEED

Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is the world's most widely used green building rating system. LEED certification provides a framework for healthy, highly efficient, and cost-saving green buildings, which offer environmental, social and governance benefits. LEED certification is a globally recognized symbol of sustainability achievement, and it is backed by an entire industry of committed organizations and individuals paving the way for market transformation.

BREEAM

Since 1990, BREEAM’s third-party certified standards have helped improve asset performance at every stage, from design through construction, through use and refurbishment. Millions of buildings around the world are registered to BREEAM’s holistic approach to achieve environmental and social governance (ESG), health, and net zero goals. BREEAM supports solutions to reduce carbon emissions to net zero, improve whole life performance, manage health and social impacts, boost circularity, resilience and biodiversity, and support disclosures and reporting.

Verde

VERDE is an assessment tool for the certification of the sustainability of buildings. It incorporates a methodology for assessing the sustainability of a building in relation to several elements. It is responsible for assessing the Life Cycle Analysis of a building and its environmental, social and economic aspects through indicators that measure the impact on aspects related to sustainability. The VERDE methodology is based on the Level(s) framework and the European Taxonomy Regulation .

Among the environmental contributions of Roca products, the following aspects stand out, shared by the 3 certifications standards:

Water Water efficiency and management
Materials Sourcing of raw materials, recycled content, embodied carbon, verified environmental information, material ingredients, waste management
Energy Embodied carbon and energy
Indoor environmental quality Low-emitting materials
Innovation Cutting-edge products and processes

Implementing various strategies that contribute to the water and energy saving Roca products can contribute to comply with the water efficiency requirements settled by LEED, BREEAM and VERDE. Here some of the key attributes of our bathroom products with direct contribution:

Dual flush toilets Dual flushing mechanisms with various levels of savings
Low consumption urinals Low consumption urinals with a wide range of saving options in flush valves and fittings
Faucet types Water savings, through options of single-lever, electronic control and self-closing faucets, with aerators and integrated flow limiters
Water flow limiters Energy saving through a water flow limiter in thermostatic faucets
Water re-use Integration of systems to re-use of greywater and compatibility with saline water

Roca's commitment to the environment and green building

Roca assumes its responsibility for sustainable development at different levels: manufacturing processes, product development and social action.

Impact of construction on the environment

The household consumption can oscillate between 125 and 225 litres per person and day, from which around 65% is destined in the bathroom space. With appropriate saving devices, a home of 4 people can save between 20% and 50% of water consumption, equivalent to more than 150,000 l annually.

On the other hand, the worldwide demand of raw materials and energy has not stopped to increase for several centuries. This demand is observed to raise at present due to the emerging countries progress and to the constant growth of more industrialized countries. The building and construction sector has a considerable contribution to the global environmental of human activities.

More than 40% of total energy consumption in Europe corresponds to this sector, as well as 30% of the use of raw materials. It is also the responsible sector of more than a third greenhouse gas emissions, in the developed and emerging countries.

With eco-efficient measures in production and in use phase of constructive elements, we can obtain significant improvements in environmental, health and comfort issues.

Decarbonization

Roca Group has made significant progress in its decarbonization plan in 2023, developing initiatives that put the company at the forefront of sustainable production in the industry.

Circularity

Following a thorough analysis of its materials and processes, Roca Group has launched its Circularity Roadmap, a comprehensive action plan to tackle the challenges of the circular economy. The Circularity Roadmap incorporates the following concepts; Ecodesign, Materials, Packaging, Waste, Product end-of-life.

Products

We are constantly innovating their products and presenting their latest proposals to outfit the bathroom space at ISH, the world’s leading trade fair for the industry, held every two years in Frankfurt.
