The second Portuguese edition of the popular bathroom design contest was celebrated on 11th March at the Lisbon School of Architecture. The event attracted over 320 participants who were asked to design a product or solution to aid personal hygiene habits in catastrophes or natural disasters. The brief requested the design to include elements or functionalities that improve the respective users’ lives, allow for privacy and guarantee sustainability.

The resulting projects were impressive and inspirational. The three winners were students from the fields of design, arts and architecture. João Queirós, a student of the School of Arts and Design Caldas da Rainha, was given first prize for his project ‘Hygibucket’. This practical and versatile solution perfectly reflects the reality of a catastrophe, with great attention to detail at execution level. Second prize was awarded to Bernardo Pereira and Rodrigo Santa Rita, students at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Lisbon. The jury selected Emergency Hygiene Unit for its good presentation, sound design, and ease to understand, transport, and disassemble. Two students from the Faculty of Fine Arts of Lisbon University, Joana Gonçalves and Miguel Lamas, were given the third prize for their project On the Go, a compact and multifunctional solution with excellent storage capacity and easy to transport.

At the core of each Challenge is Roca’s desire to give young designers a platform to showcase their skills and connect with the architecture and design community. Since its beginning in 2012, the One Day Design Challenge has consistently grown in popularity and has taken place in over a dozen countries around the world. The next edition will take place in Jakarta on July 22nd.
